Finding the right weight

Choosing the Right Weight for Comfort, Calm, and Rest

Weighted blankets are often chosen for one simple reason: the desire to rest more deeply.
To fall asleep more easily. To feel calmer. To wake up less tense.

They are used by adults, teenagers, and children — including people who experience anxiety, sensory sensitivity, ADHD, or autism — but one question comes up again and again:

How heavy should a weighted blanket be?

The answer matters more than many people expect.
The right weight doesn’t just affect comfort — it shapes the entire experience.

Finding the right balance

A weighted blanket works through deep pressure stimulation — a gentle, evenly distributed weight that helps the body feel grounded and supported. When the weight is right, the nervous system can soften, breathing slows, and rest comes more naturally.

As a general guideline used by sleep specialists and occupational therapists, a weighted blanket should weigh around 10–12% of the user’s body weight.

For example:

  • Child (20 kg) → 2–3 kg blanket

  • Teen (50 kg) → 5–6 kg blanket

  • Adult (70 kg) → 7–8 kg blanket

This range allows the blanket to feel present and calming — without ever feeling restrictive.

At aspeegee, our blankets are designed around this principle and tested to ensure they feel supportive, never overwhelming.

Why weight matters

A calmer nervous system

When the weight is balanced correctly, the body often responds with a sense of ease. Many people describe feeling calmer, less restless, and more settled — especially in the evening or before sleep.

For individuals with heightened sensory sensitivity, including some neurodivergent people, this gentle pressure can feel especially grounding.

Rest that feels safe

A blanket that is too light may not provide enough sensory feedback to be effective.
One that is too heavy can interrupt rest instead of supporting it.

The goal is not heaviness — it’s containment without constraint.

When a blanket feels too heavy

Especially for children and sensitive sleepers, weight should always feel reassuring, not demanding.

A blanket that is too heavy can:

  • make movement feel restricted

  • create discomfort around the chest or shoulders

  • lead to overheating

  • increase tension rather than calm

This is why choosing the correct weight is as much about safety and trust as it is about comfort.

A note on children and sensitive users

Weighted blankets should never be used for babies or toddlers under the age of three.
For children, it’s essential that they can remove the blanket independently and move freely underneath it.

If there is uncertainty — especially for children with additional sensory or developmental needs — consulting a professional is always encouraged.

This is also why we design separate sizes and weights for children, teenagers, and adults.

Choosing with intention

When selecting a weighted blanket, we always recommend:

  • Starting with around 10% of body weight

  • Allowing time to adjust — the sensation can feel new at first

  • Choosing breathable, certified materials

  • Ensuring the weight is evenly distributed and securely stitched

Calm is not created by excess — it’s created by balance.
